The Center for German and European Studies (DESK) was established in 2000 to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of German and European Studies, and offer students educational programs to prepare for careers in various fields. DESK is involved in both research and educational activities on contemporary German and European politics, economy, society, and culture in close cooperation with the departments and research centers located in the Komaba campus, as well as various graduate schools and research centers in the Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo. DESK is the first established DAAD-Center in East Asia that is funded by DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service. As such, it has a close relationship with other DAAD-Centers in East Asia, and serves as an active hub in a worldwide network of international research collaboration on German and European Studies.
